Marshalswick Baptist Free Church - Patchwork Group

The Patchwork group usually meets once a month at the homes of its members for socialising and sewing (in that order!).  New members of any ability are welcome.  Here are some examples of the Patchwork group’s projects.

In the beginning the group worked towards making patchwork baby blankets.  Once completed, these blankets are then presented to children dedicated at a service of Infant Presentation.  Each blanket is made up of diamond shapes which are sewn into stars by group members and then attached together to form the pattern on the front of the blanket.  This is an example of a blue-themed blanket

Since the blankets take quite a while to produce, the next project was to create quilted pictures of Bible stories to give to children dedicated at a service of Infant Presentation.  These pictures are made by drawing the design on special thin paper, painting it with special paints, ironing the picture onto a clean piece of fabric and then quilting it.  This is an un-framed picture of Creation.

Once completed the quilted pictures are framed by a member of our congregation.  This is a framed picture of Ruth gleaning corn in Boaz’s fields.

The Patchwork group were asked to provide some banners to be displayed in the church as a focus for worship during services.  This is a picture of the latest banner which was produced for this year’s Harvest Festival.  These banners are produced using an appliqué technique.

This is the current Patchwork Group project.  We are making quilted bags with eight pockets on the front for crayons.  We intend to send these bags, complete with crayons and pads of paper, to the YMCA school for Roma children in Shkodra, North Albania that the church is linked with.
